Capitol Technology University: Leading the way in artificial intelligence education

It’s no secret that critical industries within banking, finance, healthcare, and e-commerce are seeking to fully incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) for process optimisation, customer engagement, data analysis, and various other day-to-day tasks. And while these industries are just now realising the potential of this technology, this is something Capitol Technology University has predicted all along.

The institution has been a pioneering force in technology education since its establishment in 1927. And as the first university in Maryland, U.S.A. to offer a Bachelor of Science in AI, it is further establishing itself as a premier institution for future-focused studies. Its commitment to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education is complemented by its location in Washington, DC — a leading technology hub that grants students access to internships and job opportunities with top agencies like the NSA and NASA, Goddard and private employers like Amazon and Capitol One.

This is welcome news for professionals looking to immerse themselves in the industry while refining their skills. For them, Capitol Tech offers the Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science, which boasts a comprehensive curriculum that covers AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, and data science, preparing students to excel in various tech roles. In fact, this programme ranked #10 Most Affordable Master’s in Computer Science in the U.S.A. by Master’s Programme Guide.

This Master’s offers an both an online and on-campus delivery option. And as online education typically incurs lower overhead costs compared to traditional on-campus programmes, Capitol Tech passes savings on to students through reduced tuition fees. Designed with the needs of busy professionals in mind, this route allows students to learn at their own pace and study at times and locations that suit their schedules. The online format also facilitates connections with a diverse network of peers and faculty from around the globe, enriching the learning experience with varied perspectives and expertise.

While the MS in Computer Science offers both on-campus and online options, the university’s Master of Research (MRes) in Artificial Intelligence is only offered virtually. This research-intensive programme is reserved for professionals with AI-related backgrounds looking to spearhead innovation in AI, robotics, computer science, hardware and software engineering, and machine learning. In 2023, it was ranked 6th by MastersinAI.org for being one of the most affordable Master’s in AI.

With such flexible programmes on offer, it’s little wonder why Capitol Technology University was recognised as one of the best schools for online learning at the master’s level by OnlineMastersDegrees.org in 2024. Its commitment to promoting the responsible and safe development of AI fuelled its acceptance as a member of the US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). Established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), this initiative brings together leading organisations to tackle the critical challenges in AI safety and ethics.

Capitol Tech is already addressing some of these concerts in its very own AI Centre of Excellence (AICE). The Centre aims to foster a dynamic ecosystem where students, faculty, and global partners collaborate on innovative AI projects. Its pillars are research, educational excellence, industry collaboration, community engagement, and of course, ethical and responsible AI.

“The idea was to make sure that we have innovative research going on, that we can look at the education being provided, talk to and collaborate with industry partners, and be able to keep up to date with what is happening with AI,” shares Dr. Najam Hassan, Capitol Tech’s new Department Chair of Computer and Data Science. “So far, we have been talking to different technology partners and looking into possible technology incubators for AI startups. We have even created an advisory board.”

Launched in March 2024, the Centre will also serve as a hub for students with big ideas — much like the kind Dr. Hassan frequently nurtures in his Advanced Machine Learning class. For instance, one student developed a sign language recognition application, and another group used AI to stitch together various images taken by a drone flying over the campus to create a larger composite image.

With all of this in mind, it’s easy to understand why Capitol Technology University is ranked among Forbes’ top 8% of best colleges in America. The best part? This world-class education is open to all.

Committed to facilitating students access to its campus to pursue an MS in Computer Science, Capitol Tech is offering a visa application process to international students. New applications for the Fall 2024 semester are due by June 1, 2024, while those aiming for the Spring 2025 semester should submit their applications by Oct. 1, 2024. The deadline to transfer a visa for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 are Aug. 1st, 2024 and Dec. 2, 2024, respectively. Click here to secure your spot.
