How were the Pyramids built? Why do suspension bridges not fail? What is the fastest way to reach your destination? The answer to all these questions lies in a good understanding of maths.

It reflects how a BSc Math teaches you to be logical and creative — the ideal combination that takes your maths degree to greater heights. With it, you can venture into business, computer science, engineering, artificial intelligence (AI) and more.

Mental arithmetic also bulks up brain muscles far more than any quick-finger exercise on a PlayStation, according to Professor Ryuta Kawashima of Tohuku University.

Studying maths in a diverse student environment will help you gain international perspectives and teach you to collaborate with others to solve problems from different angles, literally. If this idea excites you, consider these countries:

China

China ranks among the top three countries for global AI vibrancy, states Stanford University’s AI Indies. It assesses AI advancements worldwide across various metrics in research.

What better way to learn about maths than to study from experts who compute complex algorithms that teach AI to learn? China’s educational institutions are also gaining recognition and climbing up the ranks. Look at the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings, and you’ll find institutions from China that have successfully made it to the list.

The best part? It’s affordable to study maths in China. Tuition can go as low as U$2,500. The University of Nottingham and Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University are two universities that offer mathematics degrees with low tuition fees and generous scholarships

Taiwan

US$4,050. That’s how much it costs to study in Taiwan per year — making this country one of the most affordable for international students.

Coming in at 19th place in the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings (HESS) 2018, the country is pulling students from around the globe. It’s little wonder why there is a sizable Indian student community

The BSc Math programme is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to become career-ready graduates. National Cheng Kung University and National Taiwan University are two providers that offer the programme.

Germany

A popular destination for international students for its tuition-free education, Germany is also known for its engineering and mathematics programmes. It’s no surprise that the Indian student population in Germany make up the third largest group of foreigners studying at German universities.

German universities are also ranked among the top 100 in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2022 for their BSc Math programmes. These include Technical University of Munich, Free University of Berlin and RWTH Aachen University.

Living costs vary according to your chosen city. While it’s hard to give a ballpark figure, Indian students on average should set aside at least 800 euros to 1,000 euros (US$826.21 to US$1032.76 at time of writing). This estimated figure includes accommodation, travel costs and other miscellaneous costs.

Russia

Unknown to most, Russia has one of the most rigorous mathematics curriculum in the world. This is credited to their strong teacher training with well-honed resources used throughout the country. What’s more, the Russian way of learning maths is deeply rooted in understanding the “why” rather than just learning how to solve the equation

With at least three higher education institutions listed among the QS World Rankings by Subject 2022, Russia is a country Indian students should consider when looking to pursue a BSc Math degree.

What’s even better? The country offers a variety of scholarships for Indian students. An estimate of US$1,588.97 to US$12,222.82 a year is required to afford living costs in Russia.
