If you’re looking for a school that will prepare your child for success in university and beyond, Ashbury College is the ideal choice. Established in 1891, Ashbury is today a co-educational, independent school for grades 4 to 12 students in Ottawa, Canada. From its origins as a three-room school to its current state-of-the-art, 13-acre campus, the college has grown from strength to strength.
Ashbury’s motto is Probitas, Virtus, Comitas which translates to “Honesty, Courage, Kindness.” This motto frames the lifelong values that Ashbury students strive for. The focus on developing character helps them grow as students and people, producing the well-rounded, highly accomplished graduates universities seek.
Ready to take on the world
Ashbury College prides itself not only on a 100% university placement rate but also on its efforts to ensure that students find the right academic fit for their post-secondary studies. The many scholarships awarded to Ashbury students complement this incredible track record. 95% of graduates from the class of 2024 received entrance scholarships amounting to over $7M, including a Trustee Scholarship at Boston University. The post-secondary distribution of 2024 graduates is 41% pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, 28% in social sciences and humanities, 24% in business and economics, and 5% in the arts.
Much of this high level of achievement can be attributed to Ashbury’s status as an IB World School for more than 40 years. Since 1975, it has offered the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, the gold standard of college preparation exams known for its focus on artistic, cultural, athletic, service, and leadership skills. 100% of Ashbury students complete IB English. Approximately 75% of Ashbury students complete other IB Diploma Programme Certificates. An IB education provides both academic rigour and a broader worldview to Ashbury students.
For students, it’s an engaging way to learn. The faculty members don’t just teach in a classroom; they incorporate experiments, field trips, and outdoor learning experiences into their syllabus, which allows students to better understand their subjects,” says Jack Goldberg, a Class of 2023 STEM graduate.
Students like Goldberg receive tailored counselling that guides them through the maze-like process of applying to universities. Counsellors work individually with students to find post-secondary opportunities that are the right fit for them.
A global community of learners
Ashbury College is a truly international school that fosters a global outlook among its students. Nestled in a safe residential neighbourhood, the school is a short walk from the multicultural downtown centre of the Nation’s Capital, brimming with historic sites and galleries. Its prime location offers students easy access to major cities like Montreal, Toronto, and New York, and Ottawa’s international airport and rail station make travel simple.
Campus life is equally cosmopolitan. This leading institution welcomes students from over 60 countries, creating a vibrant community where cultural exchange and collaboration thrive. Students can join various clubs and initiatives, and classes are kept at an average size of 17 students with a student-to-teacher ratio of 8:1, allowing for personalized attention and meaningful interactions between students and faculty. Every student belongs at Ashbury!
To further support student success, Ashbury College has a multidisciplinary team of experts who guide students in their personal growth, health, and wellness. Members of the student support team act as a circle of care to capture the needs of the student. The members of this team focus on academic, social/emotional, and physical wellness.
Incredible teachers igniting a passion for STEM
Ashbury College is well-equipped with dedicated teachers and facilities that support students’ interests—from science to the arts, whatever they may be. For instance, in 2020, Ashbury opened the state-of-the-art Centre for Science & Innovation to nurture aspiring scientists and engineers. The facility includes dedicated university-level laboratories for biology, chemistry, and physics, an innovation laboratory with a maker space equipped with 3D printers and laser cutters, and a computer science and robotics laboratory.
“We designed the labs with an easy flow between desk learning, lab-based work, and experiential learning to make the most of our different courses and opportunities for inquiry-based learning within them.” shares Dr Libby Boulianne, Head of Science at Ashbury College.
And that’s not all; Ashbury College offers enriching partnerships and programmes that enhance the STEM experience. Students have the opportunity to participate in the MIT Internship, where Ashbury is the only Canadian school with this unique opportunity. Partnerships with local facilities like the Canada Science and Technology Museum and summer workshops at the St. Andrews by-the-Sea Marine Biology Centre provide students with invaluable real-world STEM experiences.
The impact of these partnerships and facilities is clear: Over 40% of graduates go on to pursue higher education in STEM-related fields.
Apply to Ashbury, and your child will join their ranks, achieve personal growth, develop character, and be part of an engaging community.
